FIFA 14 now available for Android (North American version)

fifa-14

FIFA 14 has arrived at the Google Play Store, making many soccer (known as football everywhere outside the US) fans happy. Today is your day if you have been waiting to play the new FIFA game!

Like many of you, I was bummed to see the Swiss version show up this morning. It was incompatible with all my devices! I just want to play soccer, and now that the North American version has hit the Play Store we can do just that.

The game features everything you can expect from a FIFA game. These are all real players, teams and leagues. There is nothing like seeing your team winning the world cup, right? You can accomplish that with this game (once you get good).

To make things better, the game is also tablet-optimized. You will be able to take advantage of that bigger screen to plan your games. The graphics are good (as we can expect from EA) and the controls are said to be intuitive. But of course, there is always a bit of a learning curve if you are used to console gaming.

Ready to play?! You can now download FIFA 14 straight from the Google Play Store. It is compatible with American devices and the only requirement is having Android 2.3.3 and up. Oh, and it takes a whopping 1.3 GB of storage! You better start clearing up some of that space.

The app is free. Well, “freemium”. This means you can download it and play it for free, but extra features will cost you some money. See you in the field!

SpeedTest 3.0 by Ookla getting new user interface this week; our eyes rejoice

speedtest 3 for android

While the Ookla SpeedTest app for Android has been reliable over the years, it flat out sucks. It’s ugly, the user interface is outdated, the graphics are broken, and it hurts my eyes. Thankfully, that should all be rectified at some point this week.

Ookla is teasing SpeedTest 3.0 on Twitter. The company didn’t give many details in terms of new features, though they did give us a quick look at the user interface you’re presented with when starting up the app. If any of you have ever used the iOS version of Ookla, this looks pretty much identical. Those Apple folks have been enjoying it since March, and we’re glad Ookla finally stepped up to the plate to deliver the same tender love and care for us Android users.

All Ookla said in terms of a release was “this week,” so we’ll certainly be on the lookout for it as the days move on. In case you’re wondering if I’m exaggerating about the ugliness of the current app, give it a download in the Google Play Store and take a look for yourself.
